Eivee - Carbon Accounting

Web App

( Case study )

A comprehensive platform for accurate GHG emission calculations.

Transforming and enhancing an outdated carbon accounting software into a modern SaaS solution. The existing software, previously utilized through a third-party provider, lacked the flexibility, scalability, and user-centric design required for a SaaS product. Moreover, integrating advanced features such as precise GHG emission calculations and compliance verification while maintaining user-friendliness presented a unique hurdle.

Challange

The solution necessitates a user-centric web product design featuring an intuitive dashboard that delivers comprehensive carbon emissions data and actionable insights. Key design elements include interactive charts, graphs, and data tables that enhance data visualization clarity, streamlined data entry via user-friendly forms, and a responsive layout that ensures seamless accessibility across all devices.

The Design process

User Research

To kickstart the redesign, we conducted extensive user research and usability testing. This involved engaging with current users through a combination of questionnaires, in-depth interviews, and usability testing sessions. We collected valuable insights by asking targeted questions about their needs, pain points, and preferences. This multifaceted approach ensured that we captured a broad spectrum of user feedback, which informed our design decisions and ensured the new interface addressed real user challenges. Additionally, we utilized online surveys to reach a wider audience and conducted focus groups to gather detailed feedback and facilitate discussions on specific features and improvements.

Valuable Insights Discovered:

  1. Need for Customizable Dashboards: Users expressed a strong desire for dashboards that they could customize to display the most relevant data and metrics specific to their roles and responsibilities. (Future consideration: While the current design shows a comprehensive and organised dashboard, further customization options could be added.)

  2. Improved Data Entry Processes: Feedback highlighted the necessity for more streamlined and user-friendly data entry forms to reduce the time and effort required to input information.

  3. Enhanced Data Visualization: Users preferred interactive and visually engaging charts and graphs that could help them quickly interpret carbon emissions data and identify trends.

  4. Desktop and iPad Accessibility: Ensuring the web app was fully functional on desktops and iPads was critical, as these are the preferred devices for users at this stage.

  5. Real-time Data Updates: Users valued having real-time data updates to make timely and informed decisions regarding their carbon emissions strategies.

Wireframes and Prototyping

With the research insights in hand, we developed wireframes and prototypes to visualize the new user interfaces and interactions. The focus was on simplicity, clarity, and intuitiveness, ensuring that the design would meet the needs and preferences identified during user research. These prototypes allowed us to test and iterate on design concepts quickly, ensuring we met user expectations and improved overall usability. By incorporating feedback from these stages, we refined the interface to create a user-friendly, efficient, and visually appealing platform, as evidenced in the final UI designs.

Real-time Data Updates

The interface supports real-time data tracking, and every interaction with charts dynamically updates the data. This feature ensures users have the most current information available, enabling them to make timely and informed decisions.

Responsive Design, Design System, and Final UI

To ensure accessibility across all devices and screen sizes, we implemented responsive design guidelines, making the web product usable on desktops and iPads. Additionally, we developed a comprehensive design system, expanding the original color palette to create a consistent, scalable visual web experience. The final user interface boasted a modern, clean design aligned with Eivee's brand identity, featuring an expanded color palette, cohesive typography, and intuitive navigation. This resulted in a visually appealing and user-friendly platform empowering businesses to manage their carbon emissions accurately and efficiently.

Desktop and iPad Accessibility

The design ensures that the web app is fully accessible on desktops and iPads. This allows users to access crucial data and insights while maintaining productivity across these devices.

Enhanced Data Visualization

The use of visually engaging charts and graphs, such as bar charts, pie charts, and line graphs, helps users understand complex data at a glance.

The color-coded emission categories and interactive elements make it easy to distinguish between different data points.

Interactive Data Tables

The data table content allows users to click on specific cells to access detailed data or apply filters using filter chips. This design improves data accessibility and enables users to interact with the data more effectively.

These UX/UI improvements, driven by user research insights, have made Eivee's carbon accounting platform a powerful and efficient tool for businesses aiming to reduce their carbon footprint and enhance their sustainability efforts.

This iterative approach successfully upgraded the outdated software into an advanced SaaS web product tailored to the needs of contemporary businesses and their sustainability objectives. Eivee now provides a robust and precise solution for compliant carbon accounting, enabling companies to effectively manage and reduce their carbon footprint.

Please note that Eivee's carbon accounting platform is a paid B2B product and is not available for public viewing. Access to the software and its features is restricted to subscribing businesses and organizations.
